From September 2008 to July 2010, I was artist-in-residence at the John Mason School, a comprehensive school with specialist visual and performing arts status in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. I worked with students at KS3, 4 and 5, and in community outreach at other local schools.
In 2009 I led workshops at local primary schools on folded book forms, recycled papermaking and pamphlet stitch books. The books made at Dunmore, with covers of paper made by the students and recycled pages, were sold to benefit a partner school in Uganda. I also gave presentations to staff meetings on using book arts to promote literacy, creative learning and cross-curricular projects. During May and June came more papermaking and bookmaking with St. Nicholas, Drayton and Rush Common Primary Schools. I also made language journal kits for students to take along on their trip to Germany.
In July 2009, I taught the John Mason Summer Studio along with Karen Duval, the school's community arts coordinator - 10 different activities in 5 days.
In April/May 2009 I presented a solo exhibition in the 06 Gallery at John Mason School. The show, entitled Channel and Block, explored community and memory and included installation, wall pieces and books. In Spring 2010 I showed a collection of paper pieces based on lichens, which then moved to Magdalen Road for Oxford Artweeks. The 06 Gallery is an excellent space which features frequent exhibitions of students' and visiting artists' work - I encourage anyone visiting Abingdon to check it out.
I have now taken up a permanent, part-time position teaching art at John Mason (as of September 2009).
